Cataracts
Cataracts and cataract screening
Cataracts are a common eye condition that causes a clouding in the lens of your eye, leading to blurry or misty vision. They develop when protein builds up on the lens of your eye, preventing light from clearly passing through. While cataracts can develop in one or both eyes, very often one eye is more affected than the other. The development of cataracts can affect a person’s daily life by impacting their ability to drive, read, look after themselves, do their job, or watch TV.
What causes cataracts?
Age is the most common cause of cataracts, typically affecting those over age 65. Cataracts can also develop as a result of:
- UV light
- medical conditions like diabetes
- radiation exposure
- eye injury
- long time use of steroids
- smoking
- drinking too much alcohol
- having a family history of cataracts
Common cataract symptoms
Signs that may indicate that you have developed cataracts in one or both eyes include:
- your eyesight is blurred or misty
- cloudy vision – like looking out a dirty window
- you find lights too bright or glaring
- it’s difficult to see in low light
- colors appear faded
Available treatment options
If cataract symptoms are not too severe, stronger prescription glasses may help you see better for a while. However, symptoms of cataracts gradually progress over time. Eventually, surgery will be required to remove and replace the affected lens.
Diagnosing cataracts
Our experienced eye doctors can diagnose cataracts as part of your comprehensive eye exam. During your cataract screening, we’ll dilate your pupils to check the conditions of the lenses of your eyes. We’ll also conduct a comprehensive examination of the stages of cataract development and use specialist equipment like glare testing and BAT testing.
If surgery is required, most of our patients are referred to Dr. Gira who comes from St. Louis once a month. Dr. J. Kvitle also uses a variety of local specialist doctors to assist with care when needed.
For your peace of mind, we provide a preoperative cataract assessment that includes everything from the measurements to the surgical paperwork. We also provide cataract surgery kits. We see all 1st-day post-ops where Dr. Kvitle will evaluate the eye after surgery to check for any surgery-related complications.
