Pediatric Eye Care in Quincy, IL
Regardless of whether your child is showing signs of eye health or visual problems, regular eye exams are an important part of their development, and here’s why…
The Importance of Pediatric Eye Care
Having eye exams from as early as 3 years old is essential for a child’s development. Our comprehensive eye exams do more than just check vision – they also assess eye health. This allows us to detect any childhood eye problems, including lazy eye or squint, and treat these conditions as early as possible to prevent permanent effects on vision in adulthood.
According to research, 1 in 5 school children have an undetected eye problem. Eye exams can help detect these problems – especially since children often don’t realize that their vision has changed or that they are struggling to see. They assume that what they see is normal.
In terms of learning and development, around 80% of a child’s learning occurs visually. If a child is struggling to see, they may not be able to fully engage in the classroom or reach their full potential enjoying childhood activities like playing sports.
To ensure that their vision is the best it can be, we recommend a children’s eye exam for those under the age of 16 at least once a year.
Signs of Vision Problems in Children
Children don’t always verbalize their visual complaints. Signs that may indicate your child is struggling to see clearly or experiencing eye problems include:
- crossed or misaligned eyes
- swollen eyes
- sudden low performance in school
- unexplained headaches
- itchy or burning eyes
- constantly rubbing their eyes
- eye strain
- frequent squinting when focusing at a distance
- blinking more than usual
- infection on the eyelid
- inability to recognize the blackboard
- holding objects close to their face
